Upcoming and Recent PresentationsBelow is a partial list of upcoming and recent presentations by the Non-Violence Alliance. 15th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect- April 18-23, 2005At the 15th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect being held at the Boston Sheraton Hotel in Boston, MA, David Mandel will present a seminar entitled, Intervening with Batterers: A CPS Imperative. Drawing on over fifteen years as a batterer intervention expert and over eight years of experience training and consulting for a Connecticut's Department of Children and Families, David will lead the participants in an exploration of how child protection agencies can improve their capacity to address the risk that batterers represent to children and families. The session will provide alternative strategies for intervening in domestic violence cases without unnecessarily revictimizing the adult victim and shifting the responsibility for the risk to the children onto the person creating the risk. 2005 Center for Child Advocacy and Research Community ForumIn April David Mandel is keynote speaker at a community forum sponsored by the Center for Child Advocacy and Research in Napa, California. The Center, a national organization whose mission is to be a catalyst for positive advances in the lives and well-being of children throughout the United States, has invited David to speak to an interdisciplinary group of child serving professionals, politicians, and others about children and domestic violence. Alabama Association of Violence Intervention ProgramsIn June, David Mandel will be providing a two-day workshop for batterer intervention providers in Birmingham, Alabama. Day one of the workshop will focus on basic issues for batterer intervention facilitators, while Day two addresses advanced issues for experienced practitioners. Presenting Research Comparing Batterers who are Biological Fathers to Social FathersAssisted by Dr. Emily Rothman (Boston University), David Mandel analyzed the data from his national study on batterer’s perceptions of their children’s exposure to their violence and abuse. Data comparing the perceptions of biological fathers to social fathers was presented at two major conferences: The International Research Conference on the Victimization of Youth and Children held in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and 9th International Conference on Family Violence, San Diego, California. 2004 Santa Clara County Domestic Violence ConferenceIn October 2004, David Mandel spoke at the Santa Clara County’s annual domestic violence conference. The theme this year was “Moving Beyond Traditional Domestic Violence Models of Intervention.” David hosted a pre-conference workshop on intervening with batterers in child protection cases, participated in the plenary panel’s response to the keynote speaker, Dr. Julia Perilla, and offered a workshop on working with batterers as fathers. 2004 National Conference on Healthcare and Domestic ViolenceDavid Mandel and Dr. Joseph Teel, from Middlesex Hospital presented a seminar entitled, “Screening for Perpetrators of IPV in Primary Care Settings: Preliminary Results from a Community Project” in Boston in October 2004. |
