NoVA's David Mandel to Present at the 15th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect

Seminar Entitled: Intervening with Batterers: A CPS Imperative

At the 15th National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect being held April 18-23, 2005, at the Boston Sheraton Hotel in Boston, MA, David Mandel from the Non-Violence Alliance will present a seminar entitled, Intervening with Batterers: A CPS Imperative.

Drawing on over fifteen years as a batterer intervention expert and over eight years of experience training and consulting for a Connecticut's Department of Children and Families, David Mandel will lead the participants in an exploration of how child protection agencies can improve their capacity to address the risk that batterers represent to children and families. The session will provide alternative strategies for intervening in domestic violence cases without unnecessarily revictimizing the adult victim and shifting the responsibility for the risk to the children onto the person creating the risk.

The first part of the seminar will review the efforts utilized in Connecticut to improve CPS response to domestic violence perpetrators. David will present a framework for thinking about intervening batterers in child protection cases and share research results and practical, concrete strategies from a current practice improvement initiative. In the second half of the seminar, participants will have the opportunity to examine CPS practice in their own agency, discuss barriers to implementing batterer intervention strategies and identify concrete steps they can take to make changes.

Program managers, supervisors and policy makers from child welfare and social service agencies, and courts, as well as frontline social workers will all benefit from the information and valuable strategies being presented at this session.
