David Mandel works with Federal "Greenbook" Demonstration Sites

Over the past year, David Mandel has been working with four of the federally funded "Greenbook" demonstration sites to help them improve their response to the presence of batterers in child welfare cases. The "Greenbook" projects were designed to help communities improve their response to families where domestic violence and child maltreatment co-occur.

Two of the sites, Lane County Oregon and El Paso County Colorado, used Mandel's surveys for child protection workers and supervisors to measure the attitudes, beliefs and sense of competency related to working with domestic violence perpetrators. These surveys provided the projects with important information about their capacity and helped generate productive discussions about how to improve the state of child protections' interventions with batterers. In El Paso County, David helped interpret the significance of the data and participated in discussions regarding training practice change. In the beginning of March 2006, David facilitated two half-day trainings for child protection supervisors regarding effective supervision strategies when working with batterers. In June 2006, David will be presenting two days of training for the human service workers in at the Lane County Oregon site.

In Grafton County, New Hampshire in January 2006, David presented a daylong training on "Foundations for Effectively Intervening with Batterers in CPS cases" for child protection workers and domestic violence specialists. In April 2006, David will be giving a training designed to model case consultation skills relating to batterers. In Santa Clara County, California, David has presented on his work with child protection and begun to help their Greenbook project identify training needs.

In addition to work with the "Greenbook" sites, David has recently worked with the Administration for Children Services in New York City, and the Colorado Department of Human Services.
